Naturals from ACS for your Fragrances, Flavours and Cosmetics
25 February 2021
The naturals market has seen a huge increase in recent years. This has been driven by consumers growing interest in transparency, clean labelling, and eco-friendly lifestyles. In addition, the events of 2020 (we won’t go there…) have had an expected lasting effect on the behaviours and consumers demands, particularly regarding provenance and health.
Naturals are perceived to be healthier, safer and more therapeutic. Interestingly, ingredients with a back-story hold a powerful grip on the human brain. For instance, if we know that a product has been ethically sourced, or ethically made, we get a feeling of “moral satisfaction” which has been proven to make the product taste, smell and feel better! As a result, labelling products as natural is a huge selling point in todays market and the power of a natural label is growing, despite the price.
In line with this growing trend, ACS are introducing more and more naturals to their portfolio. Here are a couple of newbies…
Hexenol-cis-3 Natural
CAS: 928-96-1

ACS’ Hexenol-cis-3 is fermented from tea leaves, a 100% renewable source. The process is a natural fermentation induced using only bacteria present in the air.
Hexenol-cis-3 is sometimes known as “leaf alcohol” due to its grassy green odour. The chemical is naturally present in mint oils in low concentrations. It is a useful material in fruit/vegetable flavours (particularly strawberry), alcohol and perfumes. When added to delicate floral fragrances, hexenol-cis-3 adds a nice, refreshing top note.
Ethyl Butyrate Natural
CAS: 105-54-4
Ethyl Butyrate is fermented from Corn or Cassava, again, a 100% renewable source. This is a key ingredient as a flavour enhancer and occurs naturally in many fruits at low concentrations.

Most commonly, ethyl butyrate is used to resemble orange juice. Hence, it is desirable in juice blends for a sweet, fresh-squeezed taste. In addition, it is also suitable for use in fragrance and as a solvent.
Ethyl-methyl Butyrate-2 Natural
CAS: 7452-79-1

Again, fermented from corn/cassava. Ethyl-methyl butyrate-2 natural is used mainly to perfume cosmetics, cleaning and personal care products. The odour profile is ester-y, very fruity with the sharp sweetness of green apple. Furthermore, it is a suitable modifier in fruity and floral blends.
Massoia Lactone
CAS: 54814-64-1
Massoia Lactone is an alkyl lactone derived from the bark of the Massoia tree, indigenous to Papua, Indonesia. It is also a component naturally found in cane sugar molasses, cured tobacco and sweet Osmanthus essential oil. The odour profile is described as coconut, creamy and fruit with a creamy taste.
