Principal Insight: The History of Synarome

10 May 2021

Synarome specialise in organic synthesis and distillation boasting a portfolio of around 200 products in their portfolio. But how did we get here?

It all began with Mr Claud Fraysse whom founded a fragrance material manufacturing company in Switzerland towards the end of the 19th century. Along with Philippe Chuit and Mr Givaudan, Fraysse developed ionones and methyl ionones.

In 1926, Fraysse’s son, Hubert, founded the Synarome Society in Asnieres which was close by to a number of other fragrance houses. This his brother, Georges, they developed many specialities which are still used today including Ambrarome Absolu, Muscarome and Animalis.

Synarome was moved to Bois-Colombes in early 1950 with the Chartres factory fully operational by 1974. Today, all activities are based in Chartres. Synarome remained family-owned with Hubert’s children actively involved until their acquisition by Nactis in 2006.

Famous Specialities

Ambrarome Absolu

Ambrarome Absolu was developed by Hubert Fraysse in 1926 to replace ambergris which was proving difficult to find. Ambergris is a waxy substance produced by sperm whales and it was believed that they regurgitate the mass, earning it the nickname “whale vomit”.

Odour: warm, ambery, woody, leathery

Undertones: smoky animal, marine, mineral

Animalis

Animalis is a very widely used speciality. Since the 1950’s, it has found it’s place in masculine fragrances with lots of character. It was created to bring musk Tonkin and civet notes to perfume.

Odour: Animal, woody, warm, leather

Cuirs

Or “leathers”. Synarome created their cuir range to reproduce the scent of Spanish leathers which were tanned with birch bark. These leathers we reserved for aristocracy, making them a fascinating luxury. Cuir HF (“Hubert Fraysse”), Cuir de Russie and Cuir 17500-04 have been widely used since 1930 and are still used today!
