Supplier News: Welcome Laviosa Argimel
23 April 2021
Say goodbye to Laviosa Viscogel and hello to Laviosa Argimel!
For decades, Laviosa have been one of the largest manufacturers of organoclay based products. Consequently, their clays are recognised and used globally in a wide range of applications from industrial additives to construction, cosmetics to pet care and many more. Introduction of the Argimel name will once again establish a unique brand whilst maintaining Laviosa’s global reputation for quality products and technical know-how.
Laviosa will be changing their brand over packaging, documents, and official communications. However, the product itself will still be the same and all grading will remain the same. For example, if you currently use Viscogel ED, you will now be using Argimel ED. If you are new to Laviosa’s products, Argimel can be used in solvent-based and solvent free systems.
Coatings/Paints
Laviosa Argimel organoclays are rheology modifiers that provide controllable thixotropy, i.e. thickening, anti-settling, flow, levelling and anti-sagging properties in solvent and solvent-free coating systems. Suitable grades are available for low, medium and high polarity coating systems.
Typical benefits include:
- Anti-settling – allowing for homogeneous pigment dispersion and distribution
- Controlled surface levelling and coating thickness
- Adjustable and reproducible thixotropic control at a wide temperature range
- In-can storage stability
- Easy to incorporate grades which do not require activation through additives, heat or shear
Laviosa’s Laviothix and Laviokoll brands cater for the water-based coatings market.
Printing Inks
Laviosa Argimel organoclays are used in printing inks to adjust rheological properties, especially in high-speed printing inks. For example, Argimel is commonly used in lithographic inks for newspapers and letterheads.
Typical benefits include:
- Improved flow and consistency
- Improved printing resolutions
Lubricants

Lubricants
Laviosa Argimel thickeners are suitable for medium- to high-viscosity-index mineral oils, synthetic oils and other organic fluids for rheology control.
Lubricants and greases produced with Laviosa Argimel offer the following benefits:
- Less susceptible to temperature fluctuations – do not melt a high-temperatures or harden at low temperatures
- Water resistance
- Improved adhesion to metals
Self-activating Grades
As well as a range of traditional, pre-gel grades, Laviosa Argimel is available in self-activating grades for low, medium, and high polarity systems. These require relatively low mechanical energy to disperse and do not require chemical activation. In addition, self-activating Argimel grades can be added as dry powder during most stages of the manufacturing process. As a result, the incorporation procedure is simplified, reducing the possibility of mistakes and allowing for post batch adjustment or correction.
